Relaxed by exertion? This is how you leave the stress of 2023 behind you

Ontspannen? Zo laat je de stress van 2023 achter je

For many, the end of the year is a time of reflection and setting new goals. This is the perfect time to say goodbye to old stresses and look for ways to start the new year relaxed. In this blog, Rémon Koetje, Lifestyle coach and trainer at Happy Bodies in Alkmaar, explains how regular exercise contributes to a healthy mind in a vital body. Say goodbye to stress and go for a relaxed 2024.

Stress is occupational disease number 1

From one fact sheet from TNO shows that stress at work is the number 1 occupational disease, and that more than a million people are at risk of developing one every year burnout or other work-related mental health conditions. Absenteeism due to work stress was no less than 11.1 million days in 2022, which meant a cost of 3.1 billion euros. Other common causes of stress include health problems, traumatic events, or major life changes such as moving, having a child, or changing jobs.

The paradox of active relaxation

Exercising may seem like a counterintuitive way to relax, but make no mistake! When you exercise, your body activates the release of endorphins, also known as 'happiness hormones'. This powerful chemical in your brain improves your mood, relieves pain and… yes: reduces stress. I don't want to claim that everyone experiences a euphoric feeling after a workout. But believe me, exercising will give you more relaxation than a large glass of wine or a bar of chocolate. In any case, it contributes to a more relaxed and positive outlook on life.

Plenty of reasons not to exercise

The biggest barrier to exercise is often not a lack of will. Many people find it difficult to fit exercise into an already stressful life filled with work, study, family responsibilities and social obligations. Fatigue is also a common reason for not exercising. And if you are already stressed, you certainly don't feel like going to a gym where you are surrounded by shiny bodies and incomprehensible devices. But there is hope!

Exercise on your terms

Short, focused sessions – if done right – can be just as effective as hours in the gym. Our efficient approach with the Milon circle is specially designed to train your entire body in just two sessions of 35 minutes per ten days, completely adapted to your personal needs and fitness level. At Happy Bodies you train in an environment that feels like a second home. That can make a huge difference in how you feel during, but also after your workout. Our personal guidance ensures that you feel supported, even when you are going through a stressful period in your life. In short, nothing stands in your way, just like Gerda, just to clear your head. Because exercise not only puts your muscles to work, but also brings peace to your mind.
