'Happy Bodies is a warm bath'

We at Happy Bodies can of course say that working out with us is different from a massive, low-budget gym, but is that really the case? In this blog, Gerda Posch, 71 years old and one of the first athletes at Happy Bodies in Haarlem-Noord, tells us what makes Happy Bodies so different from other gyms.

Just empty the cup

I am 71 years old, have a daughter and a son and five grandchildren aged 24, 22, 17, 15 and 12. Every age has something beautiful. The two eldest have grown into beautiful adults, the 17-year-old is now becoming a real man, and the 15 and 12-year-olds are also developing well. I am a happy person. I've been playing sports for as long as I can remember. Well, let's be honest: when my husband died, I was out for six years. But on a good day I woke up and thought: no Ger, this sitting still is not for you, from now on you will start exercising again. Since then I've been busy again and I love it. Not only do you build up a good condition by being in motion regularly, I also feel more comfortable, physically and mentally. When my head is full for a while, I go for a nice workout: just empty my head.

At Happy Bodies everyone can be themselves

When I picked up sports again, I initially went back to the gym on the corner. Nice and close. But once I got there, I thought: this isn't for me anymore. The guys there helped me tremendously, but they're all bodybuilders and those girls, they walk around looking a bit pretty, but doing something, whatever. I need to get really good support and I simply don't get that in a regular gym. A few girls who live in the area suggested that I check out Happy Bodies. I did that and I immediately felt: this is what I'm looking for! Everyone is welcome at Happy Bodies and everyone can be themselves, old, young, fat, thin, small or tall, it doesn't matter. The coaches pay attention to you and are always ready to help if something does not work out or is not clear. It really is a warm bath, at Happy Bodies.

Back in top shape

At one point I broke an arm and a leg. When I was allowed to rehabilitate, I told the physiotherapist that I exercised at Happy Bodies. He said, 'Those are good! I'll give you a note, go and rehabilitate there. If it doesn't work, knock on my door again.' The coaches gave me extra exercises and helped me get back to my old self. At one point I did visit my physiotherapist again, just to be sure. He tested me and thought I was back in great shape for my age. I was very happy with that.

Come on, Ger, just go!

I am a fan of the Milon circle. The fourth exercise is the cross trainer, which I don't like very much. I have asthma and when I stand on that machine I get out of breath very quickly. That's the only exercise I stop a little earlier. I'm working on the Milon circle for 45 minutes and I do that twice a week, then I stretch and stretch. Once a week I do some other exercises. I like it that way and as long as it goes, I will keep doing this. Of course I sometimes don't feel like it, but then I say to myself: 'Come on, Ger, fuck off, just go!' When I'm done, I can take on the world again.
