'At the coffee table I am closest to the athletes'

Collin Schouten started eight years ago as a coach at Happy Bodies in Heemstede. He progressed to club manager and later regional manager. Since 2019, he has been responsible as operational manager for all Happy Bodies branches. In this blog he talks about his work as an operational manager and tells what makes Happy Bodies unique.

Operational business

I started as a coach at Happy Bodies and progressed through various positions to operational manager. In this capacity, I manage the operational issues in all Happy Bodies lifestyle clubs, from the staff to the training plans and the face of the clubs, to enthuse new members and retain existing ones.

26 branches

My 'home base' is Haarlem, where I spend one or two days a week. The rest of the week you will find me in one of the 26 branches in the country, from Alkmaar to Eindhoven. I often sit at the coffee table working. This way I am closest to the workplace and I stay in contact with the members. In that place I hear everything: from objectives to enthusiastic stories and sometimes a point for improvement. What is really nice is that the athletes really feel the urge to tell me how nice the coaches are. Doesn't that make you proud?

Keep up sports

At Happy Bodies, the athletes are happy that they have finally found a way to keep up with sports. Many people don't feel comfortable in a regular gym, as Romano mentioned in his blog. They don't know what to do, they don't see results, they hate the thumping music, the pumped up bodies and the big mirrors. After a few weeks they stop again to try again months later at another gym, of the same kind. It's completely different with us. Here we play quiet background music, there is a homely atmosphere and people find like-minded people here. More importantly, the training plans are completely tailor-made, thanks to the Milon circle, the athletes know exactly what to do and here they finally see results, also when health is not self-evident.

Efficient way of exercising

The Milon circle offers an efficient way to exercise. It is a fully automatic circle with fitness equipment on which you train your entire body in six 35-minute workouts every month. The devices are set to your body, so that you always train in the right posture and with the right intensity, on the way to your personal training goal. The risk of injury is minimal and everyone can work on their health in this way. In case of complaints you always move within your pain limits: if you can only stretch your arm 90 percent, we will start within that 90 percent and then we will see if and how we can slowly improve that.

Grow

I also like fitness and I like to jump on the mountain bike. But my biggest hobby is my work. I have been working at Happy Bodies for eight years now and have seen it grow from one location in Amstelveen to the 26 locations that are now there. I have also grown myself, from a coach with a passion for helping people to where I am now, as an operational manager. Although I sometimes secretly miss helping people to work on their health and to be fitter and happier.
