Slimmer by training in the cold. Fable or fact?

Slanker door trainen in de kou. Fabel of feit?

You may have heard that exercising in the cold can help you lose weight faster. The idea behind this is that your body has to work harder to stay warm, so you burn more calories. But is this really an effective way to get slimmer, or is it just a myth? In this blog, Rémon Koetje, Lifestyle coach and trainer at Happy Bodies, delves deeper into the cold theory. Spoiler alert: There is no reason to dive into the snow with the dumbbells or to sit cold behind your laptop or at the dining table.

The cold myth, where does it come from?

The myth of training in the cold as a weight loss strategy didn't just appear out of thin air. It's true that your body needs more energy (and therefore calories) to stay warm in cold temperatures. This means that if you exercise in the cold, you will theoretically burn more calories than if you did the same activity in a warm environment. That has contributed to some people believing they can increase their metabolism by exercising in the cold, or even doing regular daily activities.

Cold training in practice

While it's true that your body uses more energy when it has to work hard to stay warm, the effect on weight loss is minimal. Sorry. In reality, you may burn a few extra calories, but this won't provide the massive weight loss that many hope for. In addition, training in the cold carries some risks. If you do not prepare properly, there is an increased risk of injuries due to stiffer muscles and the risk of hypothermia. In addition, training in the cold can reduce your resistance and make you more susceptible to viruses. Finally, it can also be daunting, making you less likely to exercise regularly.

The – hot – road to effective weight loss

Weight loss isn't about being cold. It's not about locking the refrigerator either six o'clock in the evening or for it increasing your heart rate. You don't have to either sweating like an otter or banish carbohydrates from your life. It's important to have realistic expectations about what cold training can contribute to your weight loss goals. It's all about the right balance. A good night, the making of healthy choices and a realistic training plan, that will take you a lot further.
