Not feeling well? Go exercise!

Niet lekker in je vel? Ga sporten!

Are you feeling down or stressed? You are not alone. According to it Trimbos Institute About a quarter of adults between 18 and 75 years old in the Netherlands experience depression at some point in their lives. This applies to about nine percent of adults every year. Women between the ages of 18 and 34 are particularly susceptible to this. In this blog, Rémon Koetje, Lifestyle coach and trainer at Happy Bodies, explains how sport and exercise can help improve our mental well-being and provide a boost in the fight against stress and depression.

The challenge of starting to exercise

Taking the step to start exercising is huge, especially if you suffer from psychological complaints. The idea of a busy gym full of sweaty people can be daunting if you're feeling good, let alone if you're facing a mental challenge. It is therefore quite logical that people who feel mentally unhealthy or have had depression exercise significantly less often than people who feel psychologically healthy (34-42 percent versus 53-56 percent).

The power of movement on our psyche

A shame, because it has been proven that regular exercise not only improves our physical health but also contributes significantly to our mental well-being. Exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety by releasing endorphins, which give us a natural feeling of happiness. It can be an effective treatment for people with mild to moderate psychological complaints, comparable to psychotherapy or medication, according to research by the Knowledge Bank for Sport and Exercise. It ensures structural improvements in how we feel and how we deal with stress. So said one of our athletes in an earlier blog how she - slowly, step by step - worked her way out of her burnout.

A supportive environment makes all the difference

Anyone who does not feel mentally optimal will not feel like going among sweaty musclemen and tight fitness babes. Fortunately, that is not necessary. At Happy Bodies you can exercise in a small-scale and pleasant setting. Here everyone can work on physical and mental health at their own pace and level, under the guidance of your own personal lifestyle coach. A relief, especially if you have mental or physical complaints. Our Milon circle is also ideal for those who want to make a soft start. In just two sessions of 35 minutes every ten days you can train your entire body, completely tailored to your personal needs and without the risk of overload.
